This is helpful Charlotte. It is a great thing to have one item to focus on when we are doing something hard. I think writing is hard, at least to do well. When we are being taught something, we all get overwhelmed if there are too many things to remember. I think the next time I am writing an opinion piece I'm going to think about "make them feel"
I think you do that with your pieces already, Mark! You make people feel curious, interested and excited about the things you write about. But I'm glad this was helpful. And I hope you have a great weekend.
You are so kind. I am fortunate to have some new found friends who will tell me when my stories go off the rails. When I started this writing adventure, I was fortunate to have a friend who occasionally comments. He is a retired English teacher who has written a few books and is now shopping a screenplay. C is not scared to tell me WTH are you doing? I wish he would correct my posts with red pen.
Excellent to have a friend that will ask you WTH are you doing? Some writers might get shut down by this but it sounds like you thrive on it. If your posts are any indication, that is the case.
The hardest thing in my experience with writing is not being a good critic of yourself. I WISH it was more apparent. There is a wide disparity between the posts I enjoyed writing the most and the ones readers seemed to enjoy. I hope I can get the two to converge. So far, because I am new to this I continue to explore the writing I want to do. I rationalize that is okay since, for me, the goal is to write a book and who knows if anyone will ever want to read it.
You know, Mark, you can't always predict how things will land. I also write a weekly newsletter for writers (going to combine it with my Substack soon) and have been doing so for years. I can't tell you how many times I write something and think nobody is going to like this. And those are the newsletters that get the most response. I'm not sure it has anything to do with quality, but more with hitting an emotional nerve. I've also learned from writing a lot that some of my posts land well and some are stinkers. And that's okay! You are doing the absolute best thing you can do--which is write a lot. And you know how much I enjoy your work!
I am so thankful to have discovered yours. I feel like a camper with a demagnetized compass sometimes. Your posts never overwhelm me but I consistently get one new thing to think about. If I encounter a new writer this is a great place to send them.
