The term discovery draft is so much nicer than rough draft or shitty first draft, isn’t it?
I usually write a loose outline, too and then plunge in. I was getting frustrated that my rewrites were taking so long (some of those discovery drafts were quite, um, rough). But I recently took a class that was all about finding the writing process that works best for individuals and learned that diving into the middle of things is just my process. (I never read instructions, for instance.)
So now that I know this is who I am and I’m not likely to change, I’m much easier on myself. And I can jump into the actual writing with both feet!
