I totally agree with the idea that the first draft should be your vomit draft. If you like to be a bit more delicate, you can call it the discovery draft. You’ve got to get your story on the page the first time through and you shouldn’t worry much about editing. You might hone a paragraph that is perfect — and then realize it doesn’t contribute to the story and you need to cut it.
The more you allow yourself to write, the easier and better the drafts get.
